INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
One of the most valuable experiences I’ve had so far is working through internships where I was able to see engineering beyond the classroom. On the field side, I was involved in bridge and roadway projects, assisting with inspections, identifying issues, and understanding how structural repairs actually happen in real time.
On the design side, I worked with AutoCAD Civil 3D to help develop site layouts and understand how engineering plans come together before anything is built. Being able to connect what’s on paper to what’s happening on-site gave me a completely different level of understanding.
This experience showed me that engineering isn’t just calculations, it’s coordination, problem-solving, and being able to adjust when things don’t go as planned. It also confirmed that I work well in fast-moving environments and can stay focused under pressure, which is something I’ll carry into my career.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Through the Leadership Lecture Series and professional development sessions, I started learning how to present myself as more than just a student. One of the biggest takeaways came from sessions focused on LinkedIn and personal branding, where I learned how to build a profile that reflects my goals, skills, and experience in a clear way.
I also learned how important it is to actually connect with people, not just add them. Whether it’s reaching out to professionals, engaging with content, or building your network, this is something that can open doors if done right.
This experience helped me realize that being successful isn’t just about what you know, but how you present it. As an engineer, being able to communicate your value and build relationships will be just as important as technical skills.
TEAMWORK
A big part of my growth has come from being involved in different organizations like NAACP, WEPA, and King In You. These experiences gave me opportunities to work with different groups of people, contribute to shared goals, and be part of something bigger than just myself.
What I learned quickly is that no matter how skilled you are, nothing gets done without strong teamwork. You have to be able to communicate, listen, and adjust depending on the situation and the people you’re working with.
This is something that directly applies to Civil Engineering, where every project depends on collaboration. These experiences helped me become someone who can work well in a group, stay reliable, and contribute when it matters most.
